Mental preparation and psychology in Belgium

Mental preparation and psychology in Belgium

Reading time: 6 min

More than a performance, it's a state of mind. In a sporting world where everything comes down to hundredths of a second, the difference is often made in the head. At AU MENTAL, we combine psychology, discipline, confidence and high-level experience to help athletes, coaches and parents build a lasting career, on the pitch as in life.

Putting the human being at the heart of sporting performance

In sport, performance is often reduced to visible results: podiums, statistics, victories. We spend hours working on fitness to be faster, stronger and more enduring. We also polish technique, to perfect every movement, and tactics, to anticipate better and make the right decisions.

Yet behind every athlete there is a person with their strengths, emotions, doubts and history. At AU MENTAL, we believe that lasting performance is born first of all in the head. It is the mind that makes the difference in difficult moments: it allows you to stay focused and perform under pressure, and to keep your discipline even when motivation has gone. The mind is also what pushes you to get back up after a mistake or a failure, and to keep trying despite pain, frustration or fatigue.

“Among the top 100 players, physically there aren't that many differences… The real difference is the mental ability to handle pressure and play well at key moments.” Novak Djokovic

So ask yourself this question: can an athlete with an exceptional physique and huge talent, but unable to manage their emotions and concentration… really succeed in the long term?

A footballer may have practised a thousand penalties, but if they don't master their emotions, they can collapse under pressure. A swimmer may post the best time in training, but if anxiety takes over on competition day, their bearings disappear. Likewise, an athlete may have fully recovered physically from an injury, but if the fear of re-injury dominates, their body won't dare give 100%.

Mental preparation acts as a catalyst for the physical and technical work already done. It strengthens confidence, maintains concentration at key moments, turns stress into useful energy and develops resilience capable of overcoming the unexpected. Without it, much of the athlete's potential remains untapped.

The mind is what turns an athlete into a champion. And the best news is that it isn't a power reserved for the chosen few: you too can learn to develop this strength and think like a champion. At AU MENTAL, our mission is precisely BUILDING CHAMPIONS by helping every athlete reach their own summit.

Who are we?

AU MENTAL was born from the meeting of psychology, high-level experience and a passion for supporting athletes.

Our team brings together three members:

  • Emiram Joseph, a clinical psychologist specialising in supporting children, adolescents and their parents. She provides psychological follow-up for young athletes, taking into account their environment, culture and value system.
  • Andy Kawaya, a former professional footballer, is now a mental coach with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He brings concrete experience of the pitch and high-level competition, combined with a grounding in psychology, to his work with athletes.
  • Joël Odi, as a sport psychologist, helps athletes become the best version of themselves. Joël embodies discipline and motivation and offers a structuring framework to the athletes he works with.

Together, we offer mental coaching and psychological support that is unique in Belgium, at the crossroads of scientific knowledge, sporting experience and deeply human support. Our goal is clear: to help athletes reach their full potential.

Our values and philosophy

At AU MENTAL, we are guided by several pillars:

  • Discipline : structuring your mind with routines and rigour.
  • Autonomy : making every athlete the driver of their own journey.
  • Vulnerability : recognising your emotions as a strength.
  • Lasting progress : aiming for stable, deep change.
  • Co-construction : moving forward with the athlete, in a relationship of trust.

Why choose AU MENTAL?

Because we put the human being before performance, because we know that mental strength is the real engine of sporting success, and because we offer unique support that combines clinical psychology, high-level experience and structured, high-quality coaching.

At AU MENTAL, we don't promise to turn every athlete into the next Ronaldo or Messi. What we do guarantee, however, is in-depth work on the whole person. We value excellence off the pitch as much as on it. Our mission is to develop strong athletes and balanced human beings, capable of discipline, resilience and respect, in their personal lives as in their sporting careers.

And above all, because here every form of support is individualised. We adapt to each of you, and we take the time to work in depth so that the athlete becomes autonomous rather than dependent on us.

At AU MENTAL, we support not only athletes but also coaches and parents. Because an athlete's environment plays a decisive role in their success: the first coaches are often the parents, and the quality of the coach's leadership or the group dynamic can make all the difference.

That is why we also work on:

  • Rest and recovery,
  • coaches' leadership and communication,
  • social relationships within the team,
  • cohesion between peers,
  • family ties: parents-children and siblings,
  • self-confidence and self-esteem,
  • lasting motivation and discipline,
  • resilience after an injury, a failure or a dip,
  • managing stress, emotions and pressure,
  • setting short-term goals for long-term success,
  • enjoyment of the game, concentration, self-control,
  • and much more…

All the mental, emotional and relational challenges that athletes, parents and coaches face every day.

More human preparation, more lasting performance

At AU MENTAL, we don't limit ourselves to sessions: we also share our thoughts, tools and experiences through our podcast, available on YouTube and Spotify, and our blog too. We talk about all these essential topics: confidence, motivation, religion, the people around you, managing emotions, the coach-athlete relationship, the balance between performance and well-being, rest and many other interesting subjects…

Whether you are a young athlete, a parent concerned about your child's well-being, or a coach or club looking for structured mental support for yourself or your players, AU MENTAL is here for you.

And now, we turn the question back to you: in your view, what is the definition of a champion?
